Türkiye’s first international maritime disputes adjudication conference, DEJURIS, was successfully held between 10–13 April. The conference was organized and hosted by the Ankara University Maritime, Polar, and Climate Law Research Society (DEKAT), under the leadership of DEHUKAM and with the support of prominent figures from the maritime sector.
DEJURIS was designed around four distinct courts, each named after significant figures in Turkish maritime history: “Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa,” “Piri Reis,” “Çaka Bey,” and “Mahmut Esat Bozkurt.” In these courts, four original and independent international maritime law disputes were addressed. Each court proceeded simultaneously and independently, offering participants a unique and comprehensive adjudication experience.
During the proceedings, claimant and respondent parties were represented by lawyers, who presented their cases based on legal arguments and supporting evidence. Judges evaluated the evidence, the circumstances of the cases, the allegations, and the defenses in accordance with the principles of impartiality and conscience, ultimately delivering their judgments.
The conference commenced with opening speeches delivered by DEHUKAM CEO Dr. Mustafa Başkara and DEKAT President Mr. Kerem Yazar. Following the opening, the “Keynote Speeches” session took place, during which distinguished legal experts delivered their presentations. Mr. Hakan Tüfekçi, Founder of Tüfekçi Law Firm, gave a presentation titled “Bunker Disputes in Maritime Trade.” Ms. Selcan Koçak, Senior Attorney at Esenyel & Partners, discussed “Collisions and Liability in Maritime Trade.” Ms. Sena Demircan, Founder of Demircan Law Firm, presented on “Yacht Sale and Purchase Agreements and Associated Liabilities.” Mr. Sinan Güzel, Founder of TCG Fora Law Office, delivered a presentation on “The Right of Passage Through the Straits under the 1936 Montreux Convention.” Lastly, Dr. Birol Kırmaz, Senior Advisor at the Ministry of Justice, delivered a presentation on “Artificial Intelligence Law.”
By offering a simulated adjudication experience that effectively bridges theory and practice in the field of sea and maritime law, DEJURIS provided participants with substantial academic and professional development opportunities.
