In the TRT Haber report titled “A Lesson in the Law of the Sea from Libya to Greece”, DEHUKAM CEO Dr. Mustafa Başkara, shared his evaluations regarding the legal and diplomatic outcomes of Türkiye’s initiatives on maritime jurisdiction in the Eastern Mediterranean within the framework of international law and United Nations records.
Dr. Başkara stated that the Libyan Government, through a note verbale submitted to the United Nations, reaffirmed its sovereign rights over its maritime jurisdiction areas and explicitly referred to the 2019 maritime boundary delimitation agreement signed with Türkiye. This development, he noted, demonstrates that Türkiye’s agreements in this domain find strong resonance both on legal grounds and at the diplomatic level.
Dr. Başkara further emphasized that the boundaries established in the 2019 Türkiye–Libya agreement largely align with those determined through the Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) efforts coordinated by DEHUKAM in 2025. He underlined that this harmony indicates the complementarity of the respective studies and reflects a scientific and legally consistent approach.
The report also highlighted that Greece has sought to exploit the ongoing process by taking advantage of the situation and supporting its maximalist maritime claims through actions that contradict international law.
Türkiye’s firm stance on maritime jurisdiction and its adherence to international legal principles continue to gain recognition across national and international platforms, bolstered by DEHUKAM’s scientific contributions.
