Dr. Mustafa Başkara, CEO of the Ankara University National Center for the Sea and Maritime Law (DEHUKAM), participated in the international “Workshop on Munition in the Sea – Mediterranean Sea and European Atlantic Ocean”, held in Monaco on 17 September 2026.
Held at the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, the workshop addressed the risks posed by dumped munitions and unexploded ordnance from past conflicts to shipping, fishing, offshore infrastructure, public safety and the marine environment.
Bringing together experts from science, public policy, industry, military research, intergovernmental organisations, civil society, and relevant authorities, the workshop discussed the current situation in the Mediterranean Sea and the European Atlantic Ocean, as well as approaches to clearance and remediation, governance and opportunities for international cooperation.
Dr. Mustafa Başkara contributed as a speaker to the “Governance and Perspectives” panel, where he addressed the governance aspects of managing and clearing munitions in the sea, the relevant legal and institutional frameworks and the importance of international cooperation in addressing this issue.
The workshop provided an important platform for strengthening interaction among scientific knowledge, policymaking and practical implementation concerning marine munitions, while exploring future avenues for solutions and cooperation in the Mediterranean Sea and the European Atlantic Ocean.
As DEHUKAM, we remain committed to contributing to international scientific and policy-oriented initiatives addressing issues of significance for maritime security, the protection of the marine environment, and the sustainable use of maritime areas.
