A delegation from the Ankara University National Center for the Sea and Maritime Law (DEHUKAM) paid a visit to the General Directorate of Mapping under the Ministry of National Defence of the Republic of Türkiye. The delegation consisted of DEHUKAM Chairman of the Board Süleyman Önel, Board Member Prof. Dr. Hasan Ayrancı, CEO Dr. Mustafa Başkara, Senior Researcher Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali İbrahim Akkutay, and Researcher Emre Önsöz. The delegation was received by Brigadier General Dr. Yavuz Selim Şengün, Director General of Mapping.
During the meeting, legal, technical, and institutional dimensions concerning maritime areas were discussed. In particular, potential avenues for inter-institutional cooperation were evaluated with a focus on marine spatial planning activities and data production for offshore operations. The DEHUKAM delegation provided information on its ongoing academic studies and projects, while a comprehensive briefing was delivered on the technical capacity and current activities of the General Directorate of Mapping.
The parties emphasized the importance of advancing scientific research and technical infrastructure through a holistic approach in line with Türkiye’s strategic objectives in the maritime domain. In this context, a shared understanding was reached on the development of joint initiatives, particularly in the field of geospatial data infrastructure.
The visit concluded with a tour of the General Directorate’s departments and the Cartography Museum, followed by mutual expressions of goodwill and an intention to take concrete steps toward future cooperation.
