The Ankara University National Center for the Sea and Maritime Law (DEHUKAM), the Piri Reis University Faculty of Law, the Piri Reis University Maritime Law Application and Research Center (DHUAM), and the Piri Reis University Maritime History Application and Research Center (DETAM) jointly organized the “Maritime Law Colloquiums Through the Ages I – Ancient Maritime Law from Mesopotamia to the Roman Empire” on 5 May 2026, hosted by the Piri Reis University Faculty of Law. The program began with opening remarks by Piri Reis University Board of Trustees Member and 22nd Commander of the Turkish Naval Forces (Ret.) Admiral Metin Ataç, Piri Reis University Faculty of Law Dean Prof. Dr. Bahar Ceyda Süral Efeçınar, DEHUKAM CEO Dr. Mustafa Başkara, DETAM Director Prof. Dr. Havva İşkan, and Prof. Dr. Sezer Ilgın, Faculty Member of the Piri Reis University Faculty of Law. Within the scope of the colloquium, the indirect and direct effects of sea and maritime law, which took shape in the ancient period in the Mediterranean basin, on the normative and institutional structures that emerged in the Ottoman Mediterranean in subsequent centuries were also evaluated within a historical continuity.
