Within the scope of the “DEHUKAM Post-Graduate Research Conference on the Sea and Maritime Law–II”, organized by the Ankara University National Research Center for Sea and Maritime Law (DEHUKAM), Prof. Dr. Barış Soyer, Director of the Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law at Swansea University, delivered a Keynote Speech titled “What a PhD Is and What It Is Not!” on 15 December 2025.
Designed for PhD candidates and early-career researchers, the training addressed the position of doctoral studies within the academic system from a multidimensional perspective. Prof. Dr. Soyer provided a detailed explanation of the fundamental principles concerning the scope of a PhD thesis, criteria of scholarly originality, and the boundaries of academic research. He also offered comprehensive insights into how to structure a high-quality PhD study, develop original and sustainable research questions, design effective publication strategies, and enhance visibility within the international academic community.
The Keynote Speech further included experience-sharing on academic career planning in the international arena. Prof. Dr. Soyer emphasized that a PhD is not merely an academic degree, but a long-term process of developing scientific competence and expertise. Enriched by participants’ questions and interactive discussions, the session proved to be highly instructive and inspiring, particularly for young researchers.
