The Ankara University National Center for the Sea and Maritime Law (DEHUKAM) participated in the 3rd Boğaziçi University International Law Conference (BILC 2026), organized by Boğaziçi University Faculty of Law in Istanbul on 13–14 June 2026.
Organized annually by Boğaziçi University and now established as a major academic meeting point in the field of international law, this year’s conference was held under the theme “International Economic Law in a Fractured Global Order.”
Bringing together academics, researchers, and legal scholars from different countries around the world, the conference assessed the global economic order that took shape after the Second World War in light of today’s political, economic, and environmental realities, while extensively discussing issues such as rising inequalities, trade wars, geopolitical competition, sustainable development, climate change, and the future of international institutions.
The sessions held on the first day of the conference addressed topics such as international investment law, the transformation of investment protection regimes, international financial law, energy crises, climate justice, trade policies, and global economic governance. In the session titled “Climate Change, Green Growth and International Economic Law,” the paper “Carbon Capitalism and the Limits of Blue and Green Growths,” prepared by DEHUKAM Leading Researcher Prof. Dr. Ademuni-Odeke and presented to participants by Asst. Prof. Dr. Sevda Keskin of the Department of International Law, Faculty of Law, Piri Reis University, examined the place of blue and green growth policies within the framework of international economic law, while assessing the relationship between the Sustainable Development Goals and the existing global economic system, along with the structural problems that arise from it.
In the sessions held on the second day, current topics such as sustainability and investment law, the effects of war on international economic law, the transformation of food systems, ethics and accountability in financial law, and the law of the sea and economic sanctions were discussed with contributions from expert speakers. In the session titled “Law of the Sea and International Economic Law,” moderated by DEHUKAM CEO Dr. Mustafa Başkara, the role of the law of the sea in light of current economic and geopolitical developments was comprehensively assessed, and new legal issues arising in maritime areas were also discussed; academics addressed topics such as the points of intersection between the law of the sea and international economic law, resource management in maritime areas, international straits, and geopolitical competition.
The sessions and academic exchanges held within the scope of BILC 2026 increased the visibility of DEHUKAM’s work in the fields of international law and the law of the sea, while also contributing to the development of new collaboration opportunities with academics from different countries.
In line with its academic activities in international law of the sea and related disciplines, DEHUKAM continues to generate knowledge on national and international platforms and to strengthen its scientific collaborations.
