Information Note Published Regarding Lawful Assessment of the Use of Anti-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems on Merchant Vessels

The increasing use of unmanned aircraft and the security risks they pose to merchant vessels have given rise to new legal questions, particularly with regard to maritime security and the safety of navigation. Against this background, the information note examines the legal aspects of the use of counter-unmanned aircraft systems on merchant vessels under international law, the law of the sea, and relevant international regulations.

The information note addresses, inter alia, active and passive countermeasures against UAV threats, particularly electronic jamming systems, the principles of necessity and proportionality that should govern the use of such measures, and the powers and responsibilities of merchant vessels and their masters in responding to UAV-related threats.
