Within the scope of the project titled “Research Project of the Legal Infrastructure Required within the Framework of International Polar Legislation for Türkiye to Become a Consultant Country in the Antarctic Treaty System”, supported under the TÜBİTAK 1001 – KUTUP Programme and conducted at Ankara University National Center for the Sea and Maritime Law (DEHUKAM) under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Nil Kula BERK, DEHUKAM Leading Researcher and Member of the Board of Directors, an online training programme will be organised on 19–21 October 2026.
Organised in the context of the legal preparations for Türkiye to attain Consultative Party status in the Antarctic Treaty System, the training programme will address the system’s fundamental legal structure, environmental monitoring and permitting procedures for scientific activities, and Türkiye’s application process for Consultative Party status. It aims to inform participants about the legal framework governing activities in Antarctica and the various aspects of the application process for Consultative Party status.
During the session on 19 October, Project Adviser Dr. Onur Sabri DURAK will deliver a presentation titled “The Antarctic Treaty System and Its Fundamental Legal Framework”. On 20 October, Zeyneb ZİŞAN GÖKÇE from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change of the Republic of Türkiye will address “Environmental Monitoring and Permitting Aspects of Scientific Activities in Antarctica”. On the final day of the programme, 21 October, Dr. Atilla YILMAZ from the TÜBİTAK Polar Research Institute will deliver a presentation titled “Türkiye’s Application Process for Consultative Party Status under the Antarctic Treaty”.
The three-day programme will bring together discussions on the fundamental legal framework of the Antarctic Treaty System, the conduct of scientific activities, and Türkiye’s application process.
